How do you think of God? Is He a remote figure? Are you afraid of Him? Are you not aware of Him? Or is He perhaps an important part of your life and the person you turn to when in trouble?
I recently listened to a meditation tape where the speaker referred to her interaction with God and called it “The Supreme Relationship.” Now relationship means a closeness to another person. As we go through life we form relationships with many different people starting with our parents, then friends, marital relationships, family relationships. Sadly many of the relationships we make do not last. Perhaps we become separated by circumstances, or events happen to spoil the relationship and we draw away from the person we so admired and loved. However there is one person with whom you can form a very special relationship. He already loves you unconditionally and has done so since the day you were born, He has watched over you all your life, He knows all about you, He accepts you as you are and He is always there. I am of course talking about God.
So what is my relationship with God? What do I receive from Him which makes Him my very special person and my “Forever Friend.” We are all taught that God is our father. Jesus called Him by the Jewish children’s name for father which is “Abba.” Of course we cannot do that but it shows us just how close Jesus felt to God. I think of God as having all the qualities of the ideal father and also of the ideal mother and indeed many spiritualist mediums often refer to our father/mother God. Perhaps in this gender conscious age we should think of God as our Supreme Parent. Now the love of human parents can be conditional upon our acceptance of their values and way of life. Perhaps we do not measure up to their standards. Your Supreme Parent however accepts you as you are in your present condition and He will not judge. He knows all about you and what made you the way you are. God has all the qualities we expect from an ideal father. We look to Him to be a strong support and pillar of strength as we battle through the storms of life. When we are afraid we look to Him for protection. “God is my refuge and my strength” as the Bible puts it. (Psalm 46). God also has the qualities of the ideal mother. We associate motherhood with gentleness and comfort, caring and emotional support and indeed God can give us all of these as well. He knows when you have been hurt, suffered disappointment and experienced the lack of praise. Twice in my life I have experienced the close presence of God. Once when I was ill it was overwhelming sympathy and I knew that someone cared and another time when I was unhappy I was bathed in the most wonderful love I have ever experienced.
God is also a Supreme teacher.Turn your life over to Him and He will show you the way to get the best from your life. He will cause you to meet up with those who can help you on your path through life. Life is all about learning and as we live our life we would all hope for a patient, kind and understanding teacher who would encourage, inspire and guide us. I have had difficulty all my life with never having anyone to help me as I struggled to learn new things. When I bought my first computer I did not really know how to use it and I asked God to send me someone to help me and He did just that! A neighbour, living close by taught me everything he knew. I have always found God able to send me help when I needed it. So how do I make contact with God? It is very simple! It is called saying a prayer and I just ask him. I came across this from the internet recently and thought it was both humourous and apt. “The first cordless phone was made by God. It was the model called PRAYER. It never lost a signal, the recharging was done by the Holy Spirit and it could be used it anywhere.” I would add that it is always answered.
The third and final relationship I have with God is that of a friend. I can talk to Him about anything at all. I tell God of things I would not tell to another living soul. He will never betray a confidence and He is always available. I talk to him constantly, I confide in him and share with Him the joys and pleasures of my daily life. He knows all about my life and what makes me tick. He is a modern God of the 21st century who understand the problems of everyday life.
I have been conscious of the presence of God all my life. However the way I was taught about religion made me afraid of Him. I was given the idea that He would punish me for my childish wrongs and I thought of Him as a stern schoolteacher! It was years later when I took up Bible study and learned that Jesus said “look at me and see what God is like” that I stopped being afraid of Him. Jesus told me that God was a loving father and not a vengeful deity. He compared Him to the shepherd looking for the lost sheep, He said that not a sparrow died but God was aware of it and he likened God to the father of the prodigal son. It is so sad that many think they can live their life without contact with God. What a lot they are missing!
God loves you. He knows the solution to all your problems and what is best for you. Make Him your FOREVER FRIEND.
He’s my forever friend
My leave-me-never friend
From darkest night to rainbow’s end
He’s my forever friend.
