What price celebrity?
People are dying, people are suffering and yet what do our media prioritise on our news broadcasts? Celebrity events, celebrity lifestyles etc. Although these are often examples of other people’s mistakes that we could perhaps learn from, are they more important than a hundred people dying in a car bomb in the Middle East or one of our soldiers dying in Afghanistan? We are here to evolve and to make the world we live in a better place. How are we going to do this if we do not know what is going on in our world? Our news broadcasts are meant to inform us of news which is why they are called news programmes. The media use the excuse that they broadcast what the viewers want to see but should this also apply to news programmes? If we allow children to choose what they want to eat they will eat all the wrong things and be unfit and ill! If we want to progress on our spiritual pathway we need to participate in life not just watch it from the sidelines. Concentrating on someone else’s pathway is doing exactly that – watching. We are here to evolve and we cannot do that if we do not live our lives. Its perfectly ok to watch programmes about celebrities but on the whole it is entertainment and should be left at that – it is not news. News means things that are happening in the world that it is important for us to know about. Things that might affect our lives and that are certainly affecting other people’s lives on a big scale.
Whilst we do not want to spend hours watching news about wars and killing and atrocities we do need to know that it is going on. On the other hand we are quite happy to watch these things when it comes in the guise of entertainment. Maybe it is because we have lost our direction spiritually that we are perfectly happy to watch violence, killing, wars and atrocities when it is not real but object to seeing it on the news when it is real and real people are suffering.
Ignoring a problem does not make it go away. It just gets worse. The same applies to ignoring the problems in the world – not only do they get worse but those who have control over events are able to have a free hand because no one is paying attention! It is our world and only we can do something about it. As individuals it is very hard for us to change things but when individuals join together they become a whole and as a whole we can change things!
The reason the media give for prioritising celebrity before real news is that it is what the public wants. But at what price? The price is not only that we as a nation are becoming less educated about the world in which we live, our children are becoming less well informed about issues which will of major importance when they grow up and we, all of us, are being prevented from progressing on our spiritual pathway. Participating in life and achieving our spiritual goals is the reason we are here. If we do not know what is happening in life we are unable to do this and we will not progress. Thus the price of celebrity could be our spiritual evolution.
