Domestic Abuse Awareness and International Day of Violence Against Women

A FIGHT FOR FREEDOM

Did you know that 1 in 4 women and 1in 6 men suffer domestic abuse?

It is a very difficult situation that can go on for years and even a lifetime, leaving deep scars on all levels of the mental, emotional and psychological.

From 21st 25th November it is Domestic Abuse Awareness Week, where organisations across the country will be involved in distributing leaflets and speaking to the public to raising awareness.

International Day of Violence Against Women which is officially on the 25th November each year observed by the United Nations worldwide.

A lot of work is done to raise awareness globally through projects etc. to stop Violence against women.

This movement started as a result of three sisters called the Mirabel sisters who were brutally attacked and murdered in the Dominican under orders of the Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo.

The Mirabel sisters fought hard to end Trujillo's dictatorship. Activists on women's rights have observed a day against violence on the anniversary of the deaths of these three women since 1981. Women of Latin America fought hard to get this day recognised and to use as an inspiration of the spirit of the Mirabel sisters to eliminate violence.

A film, “In the time of Butterflies” is the story of their life and fight to end violence against women. Anyone who watches the film will be truly moved and will understand the emphasis on the work being done to try and eliminate violence. (see poem at end of article recited by the sister just before their death).

People are encouraged to participate in the campaign:
“Say NO to Violence Against Women”

White ribbons are worn as a sign of pledging against the violence and many men are becoming a part of this awareness raising by wearing a white ribbon.

In 1991 - The first White Ribbon Campaign was launched by a group of men in Canada after the brutal mass shooting of 14 female students at the University of Montreal.

Many women are suffering extremes of violence at the hands of abusers in trafficking situations. Extreme control and manipulation are exercised by the perpetrators.

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, then you side with the oppressor”.
~Desmond Tutu

1998 ‘Womankind’ launched the first White Ribbon Day in the UK and awareness has been growing since. They are currently also doing some work around Violence against men, in case some of you men reading this are asking that question!

I hope if you have read this you will help us by sharing this with others.

Poem
The Lord is my shepherd I shall not be in want He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters He restores my soul. he guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me ; your rod and staff they comfort me. (Psalm 23).

“Helping and supporting women in their healing process of Domestic Abuse and Violence has been a passion from the Heart”. - Jaswinder Challi
